What is SafeCampus?
The SafeCampus web application is designed to identify congestion and population density around campus based on near-real-time wifi data and to be a useful tool for making COVID-19 related decisions. The user may customize the visualizations in the app to view wifi access point usage around campus. SafeCampus is built mostly using R shiny, and some parts of UI structure and styling using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The application combines the campus hotspots map, campus wifi dashboard, detailed wifi overview, and weekly wifi overview in order to give users both geographic and abstract view of the Campus recent situation.
What data is SafeCampus using?
SafeCampus is using the wireless access points (WAP) data which is collected every 30 minutes and updated every 2 hours. The data collects information from over 1300 locations on RPI campus including devname, maccount(device count), usercount, datetime.
For more information about the dataset used by SafeCampus, please visit Data Utilization and Preparation
To get our data, please visit the data GitHub repository.
What questions do SafeCampus answer?
Our mission is to help make RPI a safer campus amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The user may customize the visualizations in the app to view wifi access point usage around campus. StudySafe is created to provide the tools that help to find out the hotspots around campus throughout the day, so the administrators could adjust the plan to reduce population density.
Some questions could be answer by SafeCampus application:
- How can we identify population density around campus?
- How does the population change depending on the time of day?
- Are people gathering at specific locations within the building or are they more spread out?
- Is there a time range where people are the most active?
- Is there a certain type of building/ room that people tend to visit more often?
- Is there any specific pattern for different building types?
- What is the exact hottest time and number of users at that time in a specific building?
- How can we identify busy floors for a particular building?
- Which days of the week are the busiest in each building around campus?
